FAQS

Q: Do I need circuit protection for installation?

A: Yes, you will need a 200A circuit breaker for installation with a minimum cable size of 0B&S (50mm2) or larger if more than 2.5m

Whilst you can go with a 200A mega fuse, we recommend the AllSpark 200A Circuit Breaker as it allows you to isolate via the push-to-trip function, and also can be re-set should an overload event occur (without blowing a fuse, which can be costly and inconvenient to replace).

Q: What will it run?

A: Our AllSpark 2000 Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter will run continuously at 2000 watts unlike some cheap brands that claim they can, but struggle to provide half that output.

Any 240v device that you can plug in at home will run on this Inverter.

  •  Coffee machine - generally around 1300-1600w
  • Microwave - 800 - 1800w
  • Kettles - up to 2000w
  • Toaster - 800w to as high as 2000w
  • Laptops - most run between 60w and 180w
  • Hair Dryer - up to 2000w
  • Air conditioner - caravan AC's are generally around 1400-1600w
  • Any other 240v devices - Anything you need that's under 2000w - drones, cameras, computers, IT equipment, cordless tool chargers etc.

Q: Will this run my microwave?

A: YES - The AllSpark PRO series 2000/4000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter will run at 2000w continuous output until the battery goes flat and 4000w as a start-up wattage.

Microwaves have 2 key numbers to take into account - the watts of cooking power, eg. many caravan microwaves are 800W, and the total input power, which is the total power that the microwave consumes from your battery.

Whilst it may have 800W of cooking power, it still uses more power to spin the turn table, run the control panel, internal light and fan etc, which makes up the rest of the power consumption. So before sizing an inverter, you need to check the input power (not the cooking watts) which is more likely 1200w for a 800w cooking power model.

For many microwaves there is 30-50% more to get to the input power above the cooking power. You may need to check your manual or online for the full specifications of your microwave.

Q: Will my existing battery power this Inverter?

A: Simple answer is - many will but not all.  A 2000 watt inverter is a very high power device for a 12v system. It's the largest inverter we recommend running on AGM batteries @ 12v unless you have very large battery banks (over 300ah) or with Lithium batteries specifically designed for high current applications like our AllSpark LiFePO4 batteries.

2000 watts at 12v is 166 Amps, however for an inverter to convert DC power to AC power, there is a conversion loss and as such will draw more power from the DC source than the power it converts it to.  Therefore a 2000w output load will draw approximately 175 Amps from the batteries (2000w / 95% conversion efficiency = 2105w / 12V = 175 Amps).

It requires a minimum of 0 B&S cable with and a 200A circuit breaker or midi/mega fuse under 2.5m long or 2/0 B&S cables if over 2.5m in length to avoid excess voltage drop.  A single AllSpark LiFePO4 battery will power this inverter by itself.  Most LiFePO4 batteries on the market need 2 or more batteries in parallel to provide this much power.

Premium AGM batteries like Fullriver 120ah will provide sufficient power but only give you about 20 mins runtime at full power. Cheaper AGM batteries may struggle to provide sufficient power and will suffer from Voltage sag and may initiate the low voltage protection mode of the inverter. In this case, you need 2 batteries in parallel or upgrade to an AllSpark LiFePO4. The amount of storage you need comes down to how long you want to run for.

Q: Does this inverter have a built-in automatic transfer switch (ATS) or RCD?

A: No. The AllSpark PRO Series 12V 2000W is a "portable inverter" under the Australian Standards, not a grid-connect model. That's why it has no AC input, no automatic transfer switch and no built-in RCD. It can't pass shore power through, and it can't switch between shore power and inverter power on its own. Power is supplied through the two Australian 3-pin sockets on the unit.

It does have extensive built-in protection: DC under-voltage and over-voltage, overload, reverse polarity, short circuit and over-temperature. Most faults trigger an audible alarm and show an error code on the display. There is also internal fuse protection on the 230V AC side, and the DC input and AC output are electrically isolated from each other. These features protect the inverter and your battery system. They are not a substitute for RCD protection on fixed wiring.

If you want to run your van's existing 230V outlets from the inverter, rather than plugging appliances straight into it, that is fixed wiring and must be done by a licensed electrician. It can be wired to your outlets through a manual changeover switch and RCD, with its own neutral–earth (MEN) link on the inverter circuit only. You then select grid power on one input or inverter power on the other. The changeover switch is break-before-make: it breaks one circuit before it makes the other, so grid and inverter power can never be connected at the same time.

Your 230V battery charger and any auto-selecting 230V fridge supply must stay on the shore-power circuit, not the changeover switch, otherwise the inverter can end up powering its own charger. Never connect the inverter to the van's fixed wiring with an improvised lead or connection.

Q: I am getting an E2 error code?

A: An E2 error code indicates over voltage, meaning the voltage being received by the battery is too high. If the error occurs only at high states of charge, and you are using a Victron controller, simply reduce the Absorpotion Voltage in the battery settings to 14.2 or 14.4V, this will mean a few percent less in battery charge, but will ensure the voltage is correct for the inverter to operate safely. For all other situations, please call through for further advice.

Error Codes -
E1 - Beep once a time Battery low voltage protection - Turn off the load, and then charge the battery.

E2 -  Beep twice a time Battery over voltage protection - Turn off the inverter, discharge the battery to reduce the battery voltage.

E3 - 4 beeps a time Over heat protection Disconnect the load from the inverter, connect it to the inverter again after the inverter cools down.

E4 - No alarm Communication error -  Contact Offroad Living

E11 - Continuous beep Short circuit protection Disconnect the load, check the wiring of both the inverter and the load appliance

E12 - 3 beeps a time Overload protection Reduce the load power capacity.

E13 - No alarm Under high voltage Contact Offroad Living

E14 -  No alarm Over high voltage Contact Offroad Living

E15 - No alarm Driver error Contact Offroad Living
